The inaugural PWHL (Professional Women Hockey League) is about to begin in less than one month. I agree that it could be a new way for fans to interact with the game. But at the same time, I felt a little distracted answering all those pop-up questions. I was watching the game, but not watching the game. I thought it would work better for slower-paced sports such as baseball or golf, where fans have enough time to make logical guesses.

Pelicans’ IST sweepstakes pumping up attendance

The New Orleans Pelicans unveiled In-Season Tournament sweepstakes promotion, “We Win, You Win.” If the Pelicans win the tournament, 100 fans who attend at least one of their In-Season Tournament home games would receive $10,000 each. This promotion not only increases ticket and merchandise sales but also educates fans about the inaugural In-Season Tournament.

 Draft Beer: Let it pour

DraftServ, the service provider of the self-pouring beer wall operating system, brought self-pouring draft beer to checkout-free stores Zippin at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts and Capital One Arena in D.C. This could reduce can and bottle waste. It could also beer cool all the time, compared to the time when fans constantly grabbed drinks out of fridges. As a person who always throws away left-over drinks after the game, my favorite part is that fans can pour beer as much as they want. The current service is built with Zippin’s open API, but DraftServ is discussing a potential integration with other checkout-free stores such as AiFi or Amazon Just Walk Out.

 Japanese manga ‘ONE PIECE’ at SoFi Stadium

ONE PIECE took over SoFi Stadium! The main characters were projected on the display. Also, there were towel giveaways and a Snapchat camera program with an AR ‘Wanted’ frame. It makes total sense for any movie IP to utilize SoFi Stadium, the iconic movie production hub in LA, as its marketing platform.

 Note Worthy: 50 Seasons of Jazz Basketball

The Jazz unveiled trailer for their 50th anniversary docuseries, coming in 2024. I know none of the Jazz, but this trailer made me want to keep my eyes on its release.
I especially loved The 80s trailer of the Note Worthy, where I got to know No.1 Jazz retired man Frank Layden. I hope to see more of him in their documentary.
Grown up as a radio kid, I was excited to learn that the Minnesota-based basketball teams Timberwolves and Lynx partnered with iHeartRadio to launch their own 24/7 radio station, providing fans with a different way to consume their content. On top of exclusive programs such as front office news, they may make their appearances across non-sports iHeart stations as well. For example, the station may curate a player’s favorite songs. 2023 Black Friday marked a significant event “Black Friday Football” for both Amazon and NFL. Seated in front of the TV at 1:20 pm, I took note of all the advertisements until the end of the game at 6:04 pm.

In my lighthearted data compilation, here are some key observations:
A substantial 30% of the total showtime, equivalent to 78 minutes out of 274, was occupied by advertisements due to the nature of a football game.
I categorized 167 commercial ads into 15 groups, including Amazon, NFL, Automotive, Apparel, CPGs, Electronics, Entertainment, Financial, F&B, Insurance, Retail, Travel, Telecommunications, Others, and Campaign. I opted to count the number of appearances, assuming each ad slot carried a significant financial value.
The top four categories by appearance were: Entertainment at 16% (e.g., DraftKings, Youtube Sunday Night Football) Amazon entities at 13% (e.g., Amazon Prime, Amazon Visa, Prime Video) CPGs at 13% (e.g., Duracell, Colgate) F&B at 12% (e.g., Little Caesars, Taco Bell)
Notably, certain ads featured QR codes linking to the company's website, application store, or Amazon shopping page. I am not sure how efficient it was because users had to be ready to scan the QR code before 15-second ad ended. It would be interesting to see the actual conversion rates.
The head of Amazon's global sports shared insights into their approach to the NBA in a NY Post sports media podcast. Emphasizing a preference for quality over quantity, it sounded like they were interested in NBA playoffs. However, the fast-paced nature of basketball possibly could pose a challenge in seamlessly integrating e-commerce behaviors without disrupting the viewing experience.
